The online Associate of Science in Data Science at Moreno Valley College has been ranked No. 8 in the nation among online associate degree data science programs for 2026 by TechGuide, a data-driven resource for analytics and computer science education.

The ranking is determined using data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the federal database through which U.S. colleges and universities report annually to the Department of Education. TechGuide evaluates programs on metrics including admissions selectivity, class size, faculty support, financial aid availability, graduation outcomes, and total enrollment. Moreno Valley College's placement in the top 10 reflects strong performance across these measures.

The program includes approximately 40 units of major coursework that prepares students to work with and interpret large data sets in support of organizational decision-making. Coursework covers statistics, research methods, SQL, systems analysis, and applied predictive analytics, building core competencies in data science and equipping students for entry-level careers in the field.

Instruction is structured around a sequenced, applied learning model that moves students from foundational concepts into more advanced technical applications. As students progress through coursework in SQL, predictive analytics, and data visualization, they develop increasingly complex analytical skills through hands-on assignments using industry-standard tools such as MySQL, Tableau, and GIS software. The instructional approach emphasizes applying concepts to real-world scenarios and strengthening critical thinking in data interpretation.

An associate degree in data science provides multiple pathways into the field. Graduates may pursue immediate employment, transfer into a bachelor’s degree program, or use employer tuition assistance to continue their education. Students in the program gain practical, job-relevant skills that align with both academic progression and workforce needs.

"Our students come to us with real goals and real responsibilities outside the classroom, and this program meets them where they are. Being recognized among the top 10 programs in the country speaks to what our faculty have built and what our students are capable of achieving. Data science is a field that opens doors, and we are committed to making sure those doors are open to our community,” said Joumana McGowan, Ed.D., vice president of academic affairs.

TechGuide reaches more than 30,000 monthly visitors and publishes rankings, faculty insights, and curated learning resources for students and professionals navigating analytics and computer science programs.
