Accordion Heading

Early Alert is part of the Student Success and Support Program At Risk/Follow-Up component required by Title 5, and an important way that we can all work together to help students to be successful. Every Fall and Spring faculty are asked to identify Early Alert students to receive a message encouraging them to take action.

Early Alert serves to identify students who are showing early signs of academic difficulty and then notify these students of the services available to help improve their academic success. The timing of the early alert was based upon studies suggesting that if students needing help do not seek assistance by Week 6, they are likely to drop the class.

The next working day after you submit your early alert roster, the students you have identified as showing early signs of academic difficulty will receive an email notification in their RCCD student email account. In addition, students will be sent a hard copy letter to explain exactly what Early Alert means to them and to give the students a list of additional resources available to them such as computer labs, academic support services and study areas. A copy of the letter that students will receive has been attached to this notice.

Role of Faculty

Please refer any students in your class who are showing signs of academic difficulty to one of the three support services listed in the Early Alert roster. It is important for you to submit an Early Alert form even if none of your students seem to be showing early signs of academic difficulty. By submitting an Early Alert form, you are supporting student success by linking academically struggling students with support services, and also assisting the college in complying with Title 5 regulations.

We realize that it is early in the term for instructors to actually assign a grade in most cases, but often it is possible to identify a student who is exhibiting such behaviors as missing class, not submitting assignments, struggling with the course materials, demonstrating poor communication skills, and having difficulty reading the textbook.

Critical Dates

You may submit your early alert forms after you submit your census roster and up to the date located in the Last Early Alert field found by clicking on the My Class Schedules/Deadlines link from your Faculty Menu.  If you need assistance with the completion of the early alert rosters, you may view the district Early Alert video in Web Advisor under Instructions/Tutorials/Forms.
