On Tuesday, Feb. 4, Mayor Ulises Cabrera and the City Council of Moreno Valley issued a proclamation recognizing February as Black History Month and honoring Moreno Valley College for its ongoing commitment to education and community engagement.

The proclamation was presented to Melanie Lindsay, Ph.D., assistant professor of ethnic studies at Moreno Valley College, who accepted the proclamation on behalf of the college's students and employees.

"Thank you, Moreno Valley City Council, for your commitment to recognizing Black History Month," Lindsay said during the presentation. "What started as a week of recognition grew to a full month in 1976 under President Ford, and today it serves as both a celebration of the past and a call to action toward equality and justice."

Lindsay, a resident of Moreno Valley, emphasized the significance of Black History Month in honoring the contributions of African American residents and leaders in shaping the city’s growth and success. "This month holds special significance for our city, where African American residents and leaders have made invaluable contributions to our communities, growth, and success," she said. "It is important to say today, more than ever, that Black history is American history."

Lindsay also affirmed the importance of reflecting on the sacrifices of those who fought for justice and equality. "Let us use this time to reflect, educate, and commit to building the future, where all contributions are valued and celebrated in honoring Black history," she said. "We honor the enduring history and spirit of those who fought for justice and equality. Their sacrifices allow us to stand on their shoulders, and it is our responsibility to carry their legacy forward."

Moreno Valley College remains committed to honoring Black History Month through education, reflection, and community engagement, ensuring that the legacy of those who fought for justice continues to inspire future generations.
