This program is designed to be completed in four semesters with students attending fall and spring. You can reduce your per-semester unit load by taking courses in the summer or winter sessions. Some courses are only offered in the spring or fall terms.
Program completion within this time frame is dependent upon math placement, the number of units enrolled per term, and course availability. Full-time students are recommended to take 12 to 15 units per term. Meet with a counselor to develop your Student Educational Plan (SEP), determine the appropriate general education pattern, and figure out how to maintain a work/life/school balance.
Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
- Identify the basic safety components of working in a correctional facility, including, but not limited to inmate safety, personal safety and facility safety.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of classification of inmates.
- Identify the key liability issues that impact the individual correctional officer and the facility as a whole.
- Interpret codes, statutes, and policies as they relate to the care and custody of inmates in a correctional facility.
- Apply principles and tactics to maintain control and security while working with groups of inmates in a correctional facility
