Dr. Hayes' teaching interests are primarily in physical geography, environmental sustainability, and geospatial technology. Professor Hayes regularly teaches GEG-1 and 1L (Physical Geography and Lab), GEG 4 (Geography of California), GEG-7 (Map Interpretation and Analysis), and GEG-8 (Geographic Information Systems). His areas of specialization include how society interacts with and modifies the natural environment, and how that interaction can be studied using field techniques, geospatial technology, and quantitative analysis.

Dr. Hayes has published articles on human-environment interaction in the Midwest, Rock Mountains, California, and the Caribbean.
