Political Science Professor Selected to Deliver
55th Distinguished Faculty Lecture
Moreno Valley College political science professor Fabian Biancardi has been selected to deliver Riverside Community College District's 55th Annual Distinguished Faculty Lecture.
The faculty lecture is one of RCCD's most prestigious events. Each year, faculty members from across the District nominate a peer for the honor. The first lecture event was held in 1961.
Biancardi, who graduated from the prestigious London School of Economics & Political Science with a Ph.D., will present "Outlier Nation: The Other Side of American Exceptionalism."
"The idea is to point out several areas where the US is indeed exceptional compared to other developed liberal democratic states, but not in a positive sense," Biancardi said. "US levels of income and wealth inequality, for instance, have reached 'outlier' proportions. The cost of US healthcare is way beyond the average. The ideologically segregated news media landscape also puts the US in a quite unique position compared with other developed polities.
"One of my contentions is that American citizens are not aware of the social compacts that are common elsewhere, and that the ideology of 'exceptionalism' serves in part to perpetuate this lack of awareness."
Biancardi will deliver his lecture at each of the three RCCD institutions, beginning with his home campus of Moreno Valley College on Thursday, May 14 at 12:50 pm in the Student Academic Success Building, Room 121. On Tuesday, May 19, he'll present at Riverside City College at 12:50 pm in the Salvatore G. Rotella Digital Library Auditorium, and on Thursday, May 21, Biancardi will be at Norco College in the Brenda and William Davis Center for Student Success, Room 217, also at 12:50 pm. A reception will follow each presentation. The events are open to the public at no charge, although guests will need to adhere to the posted parking regulations.
Biancardi is a published author and lecturer. In 2003, he published Democracy and the Global System, an analysis of the relationship between liberal democracy and the global system while developing a critique of liberal internationalism. He has lectured at Imperial College in London and been invited to speak at the Atlantic Council of the United Kingdom Conference on Democracy.
Fabian was a tenured lecturer of Political Science and International Relations at Richmond, The American International University in London, for eleven years before joining MVC in 2001.
