Marshall Selected to Attend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Moreno Valley College's Akia Marshall has been selected by the California School Employees Association (CSEA) to attend the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Observance, which will be held January 16-20 in San Antonio, TX as part of the city's 12-day Dream Week.
The mission of Dream Week is to advance and modernize the teachings set forth by King and to lay the foundation of tolerance by creating dialog across cultures and communities. It culminates with the nation's largest MLK march.
"I am excited and honored to be selected," said Marshall, a student services technician and an organizer of a breakfast on Friday, January 17, 2014 honoring King. "As an African-American woman, being able to participate in anything that honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's legacy is a huge honor. I hope this conference helps to strengthen the national labor movement and demonstrates the commitment of CSEA to that cause."
The CSEA is an affiliate member of the AFL-CIO, which sponsors the four-day conference. According to CSEA Associate President Michael Bilbrey, Marshall was chosen because of her participation with the CSEA.
"She attended our conference and was an extremely active participant in our democratic process," Bilbrey said. "She showed skills and abilities we look for in our up-and-coming leaders. I know Ms. Marshall is very excited to be going and I have much anticipation for her as we work to grow our younger leaders within CSEA."
